NOTES ON USAGE FOR THE RAM STREET DUAL CLUTCH SYSTEM

The RAM Street Dual is designed to be a street clutch system for mid to high horsepower cars (450-1000 horsepower).

STREET DRIVING

Use your RAM Street Dual on the street just as you would any other clutch. You will notice a slight rattle at idle with the clutch pedal pushed in. This is normal for a multiple disc clutch system that drives the floater plate off the clutch stands. If you are sitting for extended periods, simply take the car out of gear and this noise will not be present.

DRAG STRIP USE

To maximize the life of your RAM Dual, it is imperative that you follow these guidelines:

  • Burnouts – make sure the tires are completely in the water before starting. Do not burn out through the water; once the tires start to grab, push in the clutch or this will dramatically load the clutch system and reduce life. Remember that the rubber around the burnout box and starting line is the stickiest part of the race track!
  • Launching – make sure the car is in first gear before staging. Leaving in the wrong gear will destroy any clutch system. Do not leave in a higher gear in attempt to avoid tire spin – this will damage or destroy the clutch system.
  • Shifting – missing shifts will result in over reving and can cause damage to the retaining straps in the cover, possibly bending them and causing non-release.
  • At the finish – make sure to disengage the clutch at the finish line. Do not allow the engine to decelerate in gear as this loads the clutch straps in reverse and can bend the straps.
  • Hot lapping – hot lapping the car and not allowing sufficient time for the clutch to cool between runs and can cause premature slippage. Focus on making quality runs, not quantity runs.
  • IF YOUR CAR IS PRIMARILY USED FOR DRAG RACING, OR IF YOU DRIVE YOUR CAR VERY HARD, IT US RECOMMENDED THAT YOU UPGRADE TO THE 900 SERIES PACKAGE. See details at ramclutches.com, click on the Street Dual section from the left bar.

CHASSIS DYNO USE

The chassis dyno is one of the hardest things that a clutch gets subjected to. There is no slip in the tires and the drivetrain load is very harsh. It is critical that the vehicle is dyno’ed with a final drive ratio or 4.10 or lower (higher numerically). If the vehicle is geared higher, perform the dyno pull in a lower gear such as 3rd to reduce the load on the driveline. RAM does not recommend excessive dyno use or ‘dyno racing’ with any clutch, reduced life may occur. NEVER DYNO A CAR IN OVERDRIVE. See below for sample ratios and determining what gear to dyno the car.

Rear gear 2.90 x 4th gear 1.00 = 2.90 drive ratio

Rear gear 2.90 x 3rd gear 1.30 = 3.77 drive ratio

Rear gear 2.90 x 2nd gear 1.78 = 5.07 drive ratio

Rear gear 3.42 x 4th gear 1.00 = 3.42 drive ratio

Rear gear 3.42 x 3th gear 1.30 = 4.44 drive ratio

Rear gear 4.10 x 4th gear 1.00 = 4.10 drive ratio

ROAD/CIRCUIT RACING

Make sure to ‘rev-match’, or match engine rpm as engaging the clutch on a downshift. Improper downshifting can damage your clutch system. This loads the clutch retaining straps in reverse and in extreme cases will buckle the straps and cause non-release. This will not only increase the clutch life, but also will make you much smoother into the turns and help reduce lap times.
